IS IT TIME FOR LAKERS TO TRADE KOBE?

For a moment, let's move past the shake-your-head moment during the recent Thunder blowout of the Lakers, the game that had Jack Nicholson leaving for the Staples Center doors early.

During the ESPN broadcast, Jeff Van Gundy actually said the Lakers might have been better off playing that night, as they did, with a hustling Robert Sacre rather than with a Dwight Howard who seemingly has lost his passion.
For now, that's where the focus is with the Lakers, as the Feb. 21 trading deadline approaches, following by Howard's impending free agency.

Even as Jim Buss says he is 95 percent sure Howard will be back, many already are working the cap permutations on preemptive possibilities for the Lakers, as it spins out of control.

Lose Howard for nothing and, well, Kobe would be left with nothing, longing for the glory that was the Andrew Bynum era.

But might it instead be time to consider the alternative, the one that many had spoken about before Howard was acquired last summer, but one that barely has been mentioned since:

Trading Kobe?It was not all that long ago when Bryant seemingly was amenable to a trade, with a move to the Bulls among those considered. And, as recently as this past summer, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban mentioned how he previously had been on the verge of acquiring Bryant.
"Literally, in between 'Dancing with the Stars' practices, I thought we had traded at one time for Kobe Bryant," Cuban said during a Dallas ESPN Radio appearance. "I even talked to their owner. I thought we were going to have a done deal and then Mitch Kupchak changed his mind and brought him back."

To the purists, Bryant represents one of the last stay-at-home stars, about to complete an entire career with the same franchise.

But with LeBron winning in Miami, and even with Shaq finding post-Lakers championship success with the Heat, the stigma of chasing a championship has been muted. It no longer is viewed as taking the easy way out. To a degree, it's why Steve Nash arrived in Los Angeles, and Ray Allen in Miami this past summer.

For a moment, getting past Kobe and what he might or might not want, the change with the Lakers, from Jerry Buss to Jim Buss, and from Phil Jackson to a revolving door, has been so severe that tradition has become somewhat of an abstract for the purple and gold. This simply is not a very Laker-like operation at the moment.

What a trade of Bryant would do is give up on the season, but so would a trade of Howard. For that matter, is there a season left to salvage?

Beyond that, we saw how debilitating, and ultimately crippling, dealing with Dwight rumors was last season for the Magic.

Just as teams rarely trade big for small, so must the deliberations weigh in favor of youth vs. near retirement.

Understand, Bryant is one of four players in the league with iron-clad no-trade clauses. So he only goes where he wants to go. And that means only to a contender, which would remove some of the ire toward the franchise.

But what the Lakers need to do is show Howard that even beyond the extra $30 million he would pocket from the Lakers versus an outside team in free agency, that there is a support system in place beyond the current floundering mix.

The most sense? That would be getting Howard what he wants, if not where he wanted: a trade with Brooklyn involving Deron Williams. For Bryant, it would be the opportunity to play for the Russian oligarch, on the ultimate emerging stage, with enough in support, in a conference with a far easier path to the Finals.

With Williams holding a 15-percent trade kicker in his deal and the Nets having Kris Humphries' contract to throw into the mix, the money can work without overly otherwise disrupting either And let's face it, as ugly as it has gotten with the Lakers, Williams hardly has endeared himself to the Nets' faithful with some of his post-signing lack-of-leadership decorum.
Then there is the chance of reuniting Howard with longtime friend Josh Smith, another impending free agent, with Atlanta the type of market that Bryant might embrace, especially when cast alongside Al Horford, again in the lesser of the NBA's conferences.

While there certainly would be a romantic angle to ending it Philadelphia, not far from where his prep-to-pros odyssey began, it's not as if the Lakers are taking back Bynum, with the 76ers otherwise having little in the way of matching salaries.

As with many of these permutations, that's where multi-team deals enter the equation.

The possibilities are there: Wizards, John Wall and Nene; Bucks, Monta Ellis and Ersan Ilyasova; Grizzlies, Rudy Gay and Mike Conley; Hornets, Eric Gordon and Ryan Anderson.

Some might seem far-fetched considering Bryant's age. Others would need cap tinkering. All would require Bryant's approval.

But all would at least afford Howard the opportunity to see what the next chapter of the Lakers would look like, one that is coming, whether Kobe plays out his few remaining years at Staples or elsewhere.

First, of course, the Lakers have to decide what they are, where this all is headed, and what ultimately might happen with Howard, who hardly is known for his concrete answers.

But as the losses accumulate, as Howard sees the Lakers as less of a dynasty than he might have envisioned, it might behoove the Lakers to convince Bryant to go out in a blaze of potential championship glory elsewhere, so the only NBA franchise he has known can get off to the next phase that never arrived this season.

Kobe Bryant, wife say they are calling off divorce

Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant and his wife, Vanessa, say they are calling off their divorce.
And they announced it on social media.

On Friday, Vanessa Bryant's Instagram page had a message reading: "We are pleased to announce that we have reconciled. Our divorce action will be dismissed. We are looking forward to our future together."
Kobe Bryant posted a message on his Facebook page the same day.
"I am happy to say that Vanessa and I are moving on with our lives together as a family," he posted. "When the show ends and the music stops, the journey is made beautiful by having that someone to share it with. Thank you all for your support and prayers."
Vanessa Bryant filed for divorce in December 2011, citing irreconcilable differences.
The divorce filing came nearly 10 years after she famously stuck by him after he admitted to having sex with a woman at a Colorado hotel.
Their marriage was thrust into the spotlight when the desk clerk at a Vail-area resort hotel told police that Kobe Bryant had sexually assaulted her in 2003.
The Eagle County District Attorney filed charges against Bryant shortly after the accusation. At the time, Vanessa Bryant sat by her husband's side as he publicly apologized to her while admitting that he'd had consensual sex with the 19-year-old.
Turning to his wife, Bryant said, "You're a piece of my heart. You're the air I breathe. And you're the strongest person I know. And I'm so sorry for having to put you through this, for having to put our family through this."
Criminal charges against Bryant were later dismissed. He settled a federal lawsuit with his accuser in 2005.
The couple have two daughters together.

Steve Nash records 10,000th assist

Steve Nash records 10,000th assist

HOUSTON -- Steve Nash accomplished one of his most impressive individual feats while in the midst of one of the most frustrating stretches of his 17-year career.

Nash became just the fifth player in NBA history to reach 10,000 career assists Tuesday, reaching the milestone late in the first half of the Los Angeles Lakers' 125-112 loss to the Houston Rockets.

"If I take a step back, it's another example of a fairy-tale career, but it's really hard to enjoy it right now," Nash said after the Lakers' fourth straight loss, which dropped their overall record to 15-19.

"I don't want to discredit it; I don't want to not appreciate the company I share in this milestone. But right now, that's the farthest thing from my mind. I'm just trying to find a way to win one game."

The 38-year-old Nash also admitted he has seriously considered the possibility that the Lakers, despite all their preseason hype and championship aspirations, might not even make the playoffs this season.

"That motivates me every day," Nash said. "There's no guarantee (that the Lakers make the playoffs). I think three or four weeks ago, people would have said, 'Ah, it will get better.' Now I definitely don't think there's a guarantee it will, so the only remedy is continue to work hard and give yourself a chance for it to get better.

"I obviously think with time, and that might mean through the summer, we can get better. But for this season, it's definitely going to be a challenge to turn this around. ... We got a number of things we got to try to improve on to get better, but one thing that we can't accept is to take our foot off the gas and accept things. We got to continue to fight."

Kobe Bryant, who entered the NBA in the same 1996 draft class as Nash, can commiserate.

"We were walking around at shootaround and we just kind of looked at each other, and I said to him, 'We thought it was going to be easier this year for once,'" Bryant said with a laugh.

Bryant refused to succumb to the circumstances, however.

"(Nash) is a little more reasonable than I am," Bryant said. "That's how we kind of bounce off of each other. I'm as stubborn as a mule. I'm going to keep driving this thing forward and so is he, but he tends to have more perspective than I do."

Bryant, who last month became just the fifth player in NBA history to reach 30,000 career points, took time to reflect on Nash's accomplishment despite the Lakers' predicament.

"That's incredible," Bryant said. "You should kind of step back and look at the big picture of what he's done. What, five players have done that? That's amazing to come where he's come from and to be able to accomplish that. You can't lose sight of what that number means."
Bryant later tweeted, "I have to step outside of this frustration and say congrats to @SteveNash 10,000. Amazing accomplishment Wish we could have gotten u the W."

Nash joined John Stockton (15,806), the New York Knicks' Jason Kidd (11,969 and counting), Mark Jackson (10,334) and Magic Johnson (10,141) in the exclusive club.

After the game, Nash was asked whether he planned to catch any of the players ahead of him on the list.

"I'm honestly telling you, I don't know what the numbers are next," the two-time MVP said.

When informed Stockton had more than 15,000 assists, Nash replied with a smile, "So, that's no."

How about Jackson or Johnson?

"I guess I'll probably climb a couple spots then if those guys aren't playing," Nash said. "If they come out of retirement, it might make it hard on me."

Nash recorded his 10,000th assist with a pass to Antawn Jamison, who made a layup with 29.1 seconds left in the second quarter.

Jamison, approaching the 20,000-point milestone, was honored to be the recipient of the record-setting pass.

"That's not bad at all," Jamison said. "He's definitely a Hall of Famer and one of the best point guards to ever play, especially in my generation."

Lakers equipment manager Carlos Maples secured the game ball from Nash's historic assist and planned to present it to the point guard after the game.

What will Nash do with the ball?

"Usually my 2-year-old ends up dribbling it around the house," Nash said.

Dwight Howard injured

LA Lakers announced that Dwight Howard has suffered a torn labrum a shoulder injury and will be sidelined indefinitely.

Howard hurt his shoulder against the Clippers on Friday night and aggravated it on Sunday against the Denver Nuggets. Howard will travel with the team and will be reevaluated in a week.

Additionally, Pau Gasol suffered a concussion against the Nuggets when he took an inadvertent JaVale McGee arm to the nose late in the game. He'll be put through the league's concussion policy and is unavailable to the team until he is cleared.

Finally, Jordan Hill has a hip issue and will be examined on Monday by team doctor Steve Lombardo.

The Lakers have lost three straight going into a week that begins with road games Tuesday and Wednesday against the Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs, respectively.

They'll return home to face the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday, although it's not quite clear who will be on the floor in the front court. Rookie Robert Sacre will likely be recalled from the D-Fenders and thrust into the starting lineup.
